How to Sleep Comfortably After Joint Surgery

Getting good sleep after joint surgery can be harder than you expect. Even if the pain is manageable during the day, nighttime can bring discomfort, stiffness, and frustration. But sleep is also critical for your body’s healing processes, so it’s important to find a system that works for you to get some shuteye.

Dr. Alexander S. McLawhorn is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon in New York City and Stamford, Connecticut. He has deep experience in joint replacement, performing more than 600 procedures a year for the hip and knee. His care doesn’t end after surgery – he’ll work closely with you to make sure you recover smoothly, which includes getting quality sleep.

Why Is Sleep So Hard After Joint Surgery?

Discomfort and changes to your usual sleeping position can make rest more difficult after joint surgery. Especially after a hip replacement, you may need to avoid sleeping on your side or crossing your legs, which limits your options. It takes patience to find the right position, even if your pain is under control.

Best Sleeping Positions After Hip or Knee Surgery

For hip replacement patients, sleeping on your back with a pillow between your legs often works best. This keeps your hips in a neutral, safe position. If you’re more comfortable on your non-operative side, use a firm pillow to support your top leg and avoid crossing the midline of your body.

Knee replacement patients often do well lying on their backs with a slight bend in the knee. You can place a small pillow beneath the calf can ease pressure without interfering with circulation or joint alignment.

Managing Pain and Restlessness

Staying ahead of your pain will make a big difference in your sleep quality. Take your prescribed medication about 30 minutes before bedtime to settle in more comfortably.

You might also try icing your hip or knee before sleep (if recommended) and keeping your room quiet and dark. A consistent routine will help, even if you’re waking up more than usual.
