I recently (October, 2025) had hip replacement surgery conducted by Dr. Alexander McLawhorn, MD at HSS with great success. Within a mere 6 weeks post op, I was essentially pain free while walking and getting in and out of an automobile. I am now following up with outpatient physical therapy. Dr.McLawhorn and his outstanding team made me aware of what to expect both before and after surgery, which was very reassuring. If you are considering either hip or knee surgery I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Mclawhorn. I look forward to resuming ALL of my prior activities!

I write to share my complete satisfaction with my total knee replacement surgery performed by Dr. McLawhorn in June of last year. My right knee had given me severe pain and progressively limited my function for more than a decade, and I was very reluctant to undergo another surgery. After hearing about Dr. McLawhorn’s skill from a friend who had a partial knee replacement done by him earlier last year, I made an appointment. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made, as I am now 18 months past my surgery and I have complete and painless function for the first time in more than a decade. Aside from that, my scar is now barely noticeable. I would have my left knee done tomorrow if I needed it, and I would recommend him without any reservation. He is extremely talented, fear not!

Just 6 weeks ago, the surgeon, Dr. Alexander S. McLawhorn, MD, MBA, (of HSS) operated - replacing my left hip. Not only have I had a wonderful outcome -- with my new replaced hip eclipsing my existing hip capabilities, but from the very start I experienced no pain after the replacement. Dr. McLawhorn is a skilled surgeon with a friendly and crack surgical team, who displayed kindness and compassion (a good listener) during all our interactions. His staff made it easy working through insurance coverage and post operative home video physical therapy (from HSS) worked out great (overseen by Dr. McLawhorn)! My right hip may need replacing going forward, and I would not trust anyone else as my surgeon, but Dr. McLawhorn! This is serious surgery, but with Dr. McLawhorn as my surgeon and with him managing my recovery approach - I am back - stronger than ever, now walking over two miles, and back to my cycling and core body workout (every other day). What more could I ask for in my surgeon! I am very thankful and grateful to Dr. McLawhorn.

Dr. McLawhorn replaced my first hip in 2021, when I was 78. I recently returned to him when my other hip became "bone on bone" at age 82. Both procedures were done from the anterior, and both were successful: I have no residual pain or limitation of movement, and walk with no change in my gait. There was no infection afterward (I believe Dr. McLawhorn has a perfect record on post-op infections). In both cases, I had the surgery at the HSS facility at Stamford Hospital. All of the staff were professional, and there were no delays -- I left the hospital with a new hip seven hours after arriving. The speed of recovery was striking -- I stopped using painkillers other than over the counter pain relief meds within four days of the procedure. By the end of the second week post-op, my only residual discomfort was chafing on the incision. Dr. McLawhorn clearly has a deep understanding of the mechanics of the hip and the robotic technology used in the procedure. His post-op instructions provide excellent guidance for a speedy recovery. His personal style is low key and supportive, but his track record speaks for itself -- I have met several other people who have had a McLawhorn hip replacement, and all have nothing but good things to say. I recommend Dr. McLawhorn without any reservation. I've run out of hips that need his services, but I understand he does knees as well!

I have been to several orthopedic surgeons in the hopes of finding the right one; Dr. McLawhorn stands out via his great listening, general concern for what you have to say, not rushing you nor making you wait. The process for my hip replacement could not have been smoother nor more efficient. He provides an arsenal of information to learn from and rely on. I am very grateful to have found Dr McLawhorn. I am back on track in under 5 weeks and just beyond grateful to this soft spoken, patient and very responsive surgeon.

Dr McLawhorn is someone you instantly realize when you meet him that today is your lucky day . He makes you feel very confident you will be ok and removes all of the concerns you have on “will it work”. He is truly the best in what he does !

I was recommended to Dr. McLawhorn as "the guy to see" by my physical therapist once it was clear I needed a hip replacement. It could not have gone more smoothly. Surgery went perfectly, recovery was quick, and I was back skiing and playing golf ahead of schedule (better than in years because of the relief from pain and recovered range of motion). If you have to have a significant orthopedic surgery, it is hard to imagine someone better to do it.

I just had my one year follow up for my left hip replacement surgery. My recovery was fast and quite painless for me. At the end of my second week after surgery, I walked one mile with only a cane outdoors. By myself, no one with me. I felt so accomplished! And thrilled that it was all behind me. I found Dr. McLawhorn to be very patient, listening to my questions and concerns going forward. I chose him as my surgeon because of all the good reviews that he had, but mainly because two people in my apt building had hip replacements performed by Dr. McLawhorn. They both were very happy with their results and how quickly they were back to “normal”. I highly recommend him, and HSS is the only hospital to have this kind of surgery!

I just had a Left Hip Replacement that was done at the HSS in Stamford by Dr. McLawhorn. It has been 7 weeks and I feel like I am back to normal. I also had a Right Hip Replacement in March of 2019 and a Left Knee Replacement in July of 2019. I was recovered from the Hip before the Knee and I was recovered from the Knee in the Spring of 2020. The staff of HSS and the entire process was great. I recommend Dr. Mclawhorn and HSS for Hip and Knee Replacements.

I heard over and over that Dr. McLawhorn was the best, and I’ve got to say my experience has been pretty great. The consult set my expectations conservatively and my 6 weeks post-op brought some welcome news that I can get back to my pre-op activities a bit sooner than expected! I had total hip replacement surgery with Dr. McLawhorn in September of 2025, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Dr. McLawhorn performed a robotic assisted direct anterior approach that resulted in zero complications and minimal pain. I didn't need opiates for pain control, and I stopped the Tylenol 4 days post surgery. The cold air machine that I rented for a few weeks from Dr. McLawhorn's recovery shop was extremely effective at reducing any pain or swelling. I'm amazed how quickly I could walk again - pain-free for the first time in a year. Dr. McLawhorn is a highly skilled and professional surgeon, and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing hip replacement surgery. His office staff is also responsive, kind and accommodating. This is a first class surgical group and the results were remarkable. Thank you Dr. McLawhorn & staff!

Last year, I trusted Dr McLawhorn to complete my two hip replacement surgeries. At first, Dr McLawhorn recommended more conservative treatment of physical therapy before surgery, and he was mindful of my osteopenia in recommending any other treatment (i.e., he did not recommend steroid shots for me). Ultimately, surgeries were needed and went smoothly without complication. Post-surgical instructions and physical therapy/activity programs were well thought out and well communicated. I am forever grateful to Dr McLawhorn for his exceptional skill, professionalism and thoughtfulness.
