Hip Pain Diagnosis & Treatment
Hip pain is a common — and often underestimated — problem that can gradually steal your ability to walk, exercise, and enjoy everyday life. Because hip pain sometimes radiates to the groin, thigh, or knee, it can be mistaken for other conditions. Accurate diagnosis from a hip specialist is essential.
Dr. McLawhorn specializes in the full spectrum of hip conditions — from early arthritis and structural abnormalities to complex cases requiring joint replacement. His goal is to provide the right diagnosis, the right treatment, and a clear path back to the life you want to live.
Common Causes of Hip Pain
Hip arthritis (osteoarthritis or inflammatory)
Hip dysplasia — shallow or malformed socket
Avascular necrosis (hip necrosis) — bone death from loss of blood supply
Childhood hip disorders — dysplasia, SCFE, Perthes disease
Hip bursitis or tendinitis
Hip impingement (FAI)
Muscle strains or labral tears
Symptoms That Warrant a Consultation
Persistent hip or groin pain lasting more than a few weeks
Pain worsening with activity, prolonged sitting or standing
Pain waking you from sleep or requiring prescription medication
Morning stiffness — difficulty putting on shoes and socks
A limp or change in your walking pattern
How Dr. McLawhorn Diagnoses Hip Pain
X-rays: Evaluate joint space, bone quality, and arthritis severity
MRI: Detailed assessment of cartilage, labrum, bone, and soft tissues - only necessary when X-rays are not diagnostic
CT: Selected for complex surgical planning
Diagnostic injections: To differentiate hip from spine pain
