Bikini Hip Replacement

The bikini hip replacement is a specialized variation of the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement. Instead of a traditional vertical incision on the front of the hip, the incision is placed horizontally near the natural groin crease. Because the procedure uses the same muscle-sparing anterior approach, patients can achieve the same clinical benefits of anterior hip replacement while often enjoying a scar that is more discreet, better concealed by clothing, and cosmetically appealing.

Who is a candidate?

  • Patients who prefer a more cosmetically discreet incision

  • Patients who are candidates for anterior approach surgery

  • Patients with good skin quality around the groin crease

  • Patients with a normal or only mildly elevated body mass index (BMI)

  • Heavily muscled patients or those requiring more complex surgery or extensile surgical exposure are usually not ideal candidates

Dr. McLawhorn will assess your anatomy during consultation to determine whether the bikini incision is appropriate for you.

Benefits

  • Scar hidden near or in the natural skin fold of the groin

  • Less visible when wearing a swimsuit or athletic wear

  • Same clinical outcomes as standard anterior approach

  • No hip precautions required — same rapid recovery protocol

Note: Patients may experience more postoperative numbness along the side of the thigh, although usually temporary.

The Procedure

The surgical technique is identical to a standard anterior approach total hip replacement — only the placement and orientation of the incision differs. All the benefits of the anterior approach apply equally.

"I had my hip replaced six weeks ago. I had the relatively new procedure which shortens recovery time considerably — an amazing experience. No one should be afraid to have replacements. The post-surgery pain was zero."
